Town Mall of Westminster

Town Mall of Westminster

Simian and I went out for lunch. I had read that Steve and Barry's was liquidating - and had never yet been. Another sign of the terrible economy. Simian told me that they made pretty cheap and decent clothes. People were along the street holding placards saying they were closing down.

I managed to buy clothes including jeans for $10 and an excellent poofy coat for $17 all from the Bitten Collection. We came out with three bags of clothes for $130. Simian even bought clothes with MUCH persuasion).

I realised that the mall is fairly large inside and has other shops - have to go back!

Mail flag

You know you're in the country when you can put a flag up on your mailbox and the postman comes and picks it up. You also know you're in the country when everyone knows the name of the mailman and tells you how nice he is :) I used to wonder why the flags were up till a friend mentioned that you could just put your mail in and put the flag up for a pickup.

We went for a walk and run down to Cold Saturday Farm this morning, which was really nice. We weren't expecting to go that way so I didn't bring my camera - will take photos the next time.

Thanksgiving

This was part of the vegetarian selection that we had for Thanksgiving at a friend's place tonight. The food was good but eating at 5:30 meant that Simian and I were feeling peckish by midnight. Sauerkraut is a traditional B-more Thanksgiving dish, partly because of the large German population that settled here. I brought a brownie that went down pretty well.

Thanksgiving is like Chinese New Year - everything is all quiet, the stores are all closed and people spend time with their families. The difference of course is Black Friday - though with more deals online, I think there's less incentive to go to the store. When you can get a crockpot for $4, you have to wonder.

Also with the economy being as it is, one of the outlet malls has seen an increase in robbery, and much as I like it, I'm not going to go at midnight on the offchance something does happen, even if the BCBG outlet has a 15% store wide discount!

Lentil soup with butternut squash

Lentil soup with butternut squash
Originally uploaded by ariel1511976

Simian has come down with a flu so it's lots of ginseng for both of us.

I decided to make a lentil soup tonight - I also added butternut squash which the recipe called for, but I didn't have when I last made it. I did however pick some up last week - the squash was beautiful and added a sweetness and flavour to the soup.

Here's my question though - is there an easier way to cut and peel off the skin and dice the squash? My vegetable peeler didn't make a dent and I ended up peeling it off with my knife, and then hacking the squash into pieces. It worked - but it was tiring.

It's the pre-Thanksgiving rush I think. People were honking at each other in the car park - nice to know the holiday spirit can do that to you :P

I went to Goldman's Kosher Bakery (named the best bakery in Baltimore by City Paper) which was just down the road from the Barnes and Nobles and Trader Joe's. The bread was almost completely gone - again due to the Thanksgiving effect according to the saleslady. The cookies were available but I got an Italian loaf. There was a Russian grocer next door (also cited by City Paper) - almost everyone there spoke Russian! The cooked food selection was interesting.

No soft e-collars though Mom.

Here's just one part of the suet selection. They had beautiful bird houses and very cheap (and pretty good) bird food too.

Black Bean soup

Black Bean soup
Originally uploaded by ariel1511976

The weather was erratic today - it snowed, then it stopped. The sun came out for a little, deluding me into delaying my jog. Then it snowed again. The next break in snow, I went out and there was even a tiny bit of sun - and when I got home, you guessed it, snow again.

It was nice and warm inside the house though, and I was happy as a clam because my latest issue of Gourmet magazine came. I now have several new recipes I need to try, and I tried one right this evening - the black bean soup above. I can't find a link yet for it on the website, but it was gorgeous. I used the blender M sent me and blended some of the soup, as the directions called for, but I wanted a chunkier soup and left quite a few of the beans. The soup was lovely and spicy - thanks to the jalapenos and the chilli powder. It was meant to serve 4 - but the soup was so thick it filled two of our bowls. Simian felt certain we could finish it - he finished half of mine and all of his. Another winner from Gourmet - seriously every issue so far has produced at least one amazing dish or dessert, and that's probably because I just haven't tried the others yet.

I also made my trusty cheesy beer bread - the cold has not been conducive to bread making, but I am thinking a slow cold rise in the fridge is probably the way to go. We finished off dinner with some of the pecan cranberry biscuit and then Simian, went and passed out on the couch :) I blame the soup.

Not so good part - it cost $85. And parking cost another $17! Definitely not my Singapore facial prices!

Went to Simian's lab after and hung around, then K, Simian and I went to Tutti Gusti for dinner. I had this nice thick minestrone.

Simian was at work today and I made cranberry turtle bars and oatmeal molasses cookies to which I added chocolate chips. I thought the chocolate chips would be a nice addition to the molasses and they were - then again, I never met chocolate I didn't like! :) Funnily enough, Simian who NEVER wastes food, threw some chocolate away the other day - he said it was barely chocolate. I, on the other hand who usually doesn't have the same compunction, didn't want to toss it in case we had a chocolate emergency (ie no chocolate in the house!).

The cookies were both wonderful! I had trouble with the chocolate on top though - I managed to squirt some out of the bag but then the rest hardened.

After we came in, it started to rain, then it started to pour for a very short while. Then there was a tornado warning!

The next time we checked, the warning seemed to have passed, so we went grocery shopping in nearby Reisterstown. I read about the Flying Avocado Cafe and it had good reviews, so we decided to stop in for dinner.

Map of Westminister

Map of Westminister
Originally uploaded by ariel1511976

We decided to explore Westminister. We went to the Tourism Office which had a ton of information, including Civil war trails, and information about Methodism in America. Apparently, it first started in Carroll County (though this was not without dispute). The lady there was really friendly and gave us lots of information, including free maps of the area - which made me glad I had been too cheap to buy one at Home Depot the other day.

Westminister is a lovely, quaint town. There's a microbrewery, a dress up tea room, a book store, a second hand store, a comic book place, a paintball supply shop (!) and a music store
(planetofsound - take note!), among other places. We wanted to explore some more, but had to come home and wait for someone to service our heat pump.

Simian made reservations for us to go downtown in B-more for dinner, but it was rainy and I didn't feel like it, so I suggested we go to 5 Guys Fries instead.

Max

Max
Originally uploaded by ariel1511976

This is the last photo I took of Max just before I left home. He had been coughing the last few weeks and Mom had taken him to the vet several times, but the vet could find nothing wrong with him. His heart was checked on Monday and the vet didn't say anything was wrong.

Yesterday at 4 pm, he was following N around, asking for his dinner, when he just sat down, pee-ed, pooped, and then he was gone. Mom said it was heart failure. Everyone wonders whether he was also a bit sad that Shan was gone.

Max came to us from a neighbour down the street. The neighbour never fed him or his sister and so people started to feed the two of them. One day as I went by to feed them, I noticed Max's sister unable to get up. When I alerted the owner, her response was dismissive. Mom called for transport and they were both taken to the vet. By the time we got there, we saw ticks fleeing from Max's sister's body - she died of tick fever. It was touch and go for Max for a while but he pulled through. This was 6 years ago.

Max was always cheerful, loved his walks, had a dog down the road who was in love with him (and whom he had no interest in). He loved to eat. When he was excited, he would jump up and down (often for walks and food). He never complained, though he would howl if he heard a siren - we found out from another neighbour that Max and his sister had several litters. We have an elder care home in the estate and their ambulance is always speeding (often unnecessarily) down the road. All their puppies eventually were run over by the ambulance. Max used to be scared of men, but got over that. He was a very good boy. I'm sorry I didn't get to say goodbye. RIP Max.
