So I'm not the only one
who can't stand Sarah Palin (J at dinner also loudly proclaimed her revulsion). Seriously, one week ago I had never heard of her, and now I can't imagine a time when I didn't dislike the woman.
It's not the fact that I don't think a working mother can be a Vice President - of course she can. It's not even her politics (much of which I disagree with). It's not that she has a child who is herself 5 months pregnant with a child. Anyone can make a mistake - certainly a 17 year old - and everyone knows that despite the best efforts of parents, a child does eventually make his or her own decisions.
I have only respect Bristol
Palin for choosing to have the baby -
it can only be extremely difficult for her (but don't get me started on the fact that it's so touted that she's marrying the baby's father - remember the guy you wanted to marry at 17? Still want to?)
What does upset me is when I saw the VP nomination and the camera zoomed in on Bristol
Palin: imagine yourself at 17 and your parents asking you to come to their company function. Remember the awkwardness? The discomfort? The fact that you just didn't want to come under that kind of scrutiny. Sure every politician's child goes through that, but now factor in the fact that you are not say a student who is being shown off because you do well in school, or are such a nice kid - no, you also happen to be pregnant.
It must be excruciating enough to be pregnant in a small town where everyone knows everyone else - but now practically everyone in the world will know. She could be walking down the street in Casablanca and people will be like, look it's the knocked up girl! Even when Bristol
Palin is 45, unless she discovers the cure for cancer or something else amazing, people are going to remember her for one thing - that she was pregnant at 17 when her mother got the nomination to be VP.
So here's the thing that makes it really strange for me. Why would a parent want to put their child through that? I can understand this is a once in a lifetime opportunity but maybe, just maybe, it's not the best time for a pregnant 17 year old to go through that scrutiny. Even the
boyfriend's mother thinks so.
I obviously don't know any of these people and maybe Bristol, loving her mother a lot, gave her the blessing to go ahead and run - but maybe, just maybe, there are more important things than to be VP.
And yes, maybe it's not about children, it's about politics and policies - but the person who makes these policies is reflected by her different roles. Sure I don't know the woman, and perhaps I'd love her if I did - but I know my parents wouldn't have subjected me to this kind of scrutiny if I were in the same position, and that just makes me suspicious of a parent who would.
I'm obviously not American, and won't be voting - but the whole world is going to see a lot more of her for the next few months and I can only groan thinking about it.
